On March 16th, Marek Moraczyński, the lead for the Ethereum client Nethermind, shared pivotal insights via a post on the X platform. He highlighted a critical inefficiency within the Ethereum network, revealing that approximately 80% of the disk space utilized by Ethereum full nodes is comprised of historical data, largely unnecessary for validating new transactions. To address this, the upcoming version 1.3.1 of Nethermind will implement a significant update: the removal of these outdated records through an ERA file mechanism. This operation has garnered consensus among all development teams, with a planned execution date of May 1st. The implications are profound; if all prior blocks and receipts are purged, the required disk space for a full node will diminish to under 200 GB, enhancing overall network efficiency and accessibility for users.
