Unfortunately, the upgrade did not achieve the expected level of finality, which is crucial for confirming that transactions are permanent and cannot be altered. Within the context of blockchain, finality ensures that once a transaction is validated and included in a block, it becomes immutable. This incident raises concerns about the reliability of initial testing phases on a testnet, which is designed to simulate the main Ethereum network for upgrade validation. The Ethereum development team is actively addressing the issue, examining potential causes within the Eth R&D Discord channel. This occurrence is not unprecedented; the Dencun upgrade experienced similar issues in January 2024 during its testing on the Goerli testnet, reflecting ongoing challenges within Ethereum’s upgrade processes.
