Bitcoin supporter Miami Mayor Francis Suarez has thrown his hat into the ring for the U.S. presidency; Suarez is incorporating Bitcoin into his campaign.
Suarez Adds Bitcoin to His Presidential Campaign
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who is running for the U.S. presidency, has announced that he will officially accept donations in the leading cryptocurrency Bitcoin (BTC) as part of his campaign. In an interview, the Mayor stated, “officially launching the campaign accepting Bitcoin.” This announcement aligns with the Mayor’s long-standing views on cryptocurrencies.
While discussing Bitcoin, Suarez stated that emerging technologies like Bitcoin won’t be sensitive to people’s hidden agendas, political objectives, etc., and will create democratic opportunities for wealth creation.
Mayor Suarez believes that the biggest mistake of the Biden administration is not understanding cryptocurrencies. He noted that his approach is directed towards implementing regulation through application rather than creating a clear regulatory framework.
Suarez emphasized the importance of defining and implementing clear guidelines and rules, especially classifying and implementing specific digital assets, particularly concerning asset storage. He also expressed his opposition to central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). He pointed out that the federal government generally doesn’t want individuals to have access to their financial information and assets, and this decision would be made accordingly.
Suarez believes that such a move is devoid of real innovation and doesn’t offer groundbreaking features. He also stated that if he were the President of the United States, he would ban CBDCs.
Suarez Competing Against Trump and DeSantis for Presidency
Suarez announced his candidacy for the presidency in June and joined the race alongside other GOP candidates like former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. His decision to enable Bitcoin donations doesn’t come as a surprise to the crypto community, given Miami’s Mayor’s comprehensive history as a supporter of digital assets, particularly Bitcoin.
He has consistently expressed his belief in Bitcoin’s potential to democratize wealth distribution for all Americans, thus leaving a lasting impact on the future. By pledging to transform Miami into a hub for Bitcoin activities and by accepting a portion of his salary in Bitcoin, Suarez has become a U.S. politician dedicated to the digital revolution.
Suarez’s crypto ventures have not all been successful so far. Earlier in 2021, the Miami Mayor launched a cryptocurrency named MiamiCoin (MIA). He planned to use MiamiCoin to provide regular Bitcoin-based incentives to Miami residents, similar to dividends distributed to company shareholders.
However, the value of the cryptocurrency has dropped by approximately 95% since its creation. Despite this setback, Suarez maintains a strong relationship with the industry and highlights the necessity for a president who understands the nation’s cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence technologies, emphasizing the need for the digital revolution.
