Bitcoin Stolen in Canada: Four Attackers Disguised as Deliverymen Sentenced to 7 Years for a Meticulously Planned Home Invasion
According to a New York Post report, a Hong Kong resident received a seven-year prison sentence in Canada tied to a brutal home-invasion targeting cryptocurrency assets in British Columbia.
Four attackers disguised as delivery personnel carried out a 13.5-hour assault on a family of three, using waterboarding and threats of sexual violence to coerce access to their encrypted wallets, transferring about $1.6 million in Bitcoin.
Investigators say the operation was meticulously planned, with weeks of surveillance, cameras around the residence, and reconnaissance aimed at crypto holdings and daily routines. In a bid to erase evidence, the suspects submerged electronics in a bleach solution; the next morning, the victims’ daughter escaped and alerted authorities.
The court described the case as an extreme act of violence and a meticulously planned cryptocurrency robbery, underscoring rising risks to asset-rich households and the need for strengthened security around private keys and wallets.
