Brooklyn Man Charged in Nearly $16 Million Coinbase Phishing Scam Targeting About 100 Users, Laundered via Crypto Mixer

The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office announced that a 23-year-old Brooklyn resident has been charged with orchestrating a large-scale phishing scam that duped nearly $16 million from about 100 Coinbase users, highlighting a notable cryptocurrency crime case.

The suspect allegedly posed as Coinbase customer support, duping victims into transferring assets to the attacker’s personal address and then laundering the proceeds through a cryptocurrency mixer.

Authorities have recovered roughly $105,000 in cash and about $400,000 in cryptocurrency to date.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said the perpetrator will be held accountable and brought to justice.
