Canada Revenue Agency: 40% of Crypto Platform Users in Tax Evasion or High-Risk Non-Compliance, Audits Reclaim Over CAD 100 Million
Canada’s tax authority, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), reports that about 40% of taxpayers using cryptocurrency platforms are involved in tax evasion or high‑risk non‑compliance. In an email briefing, its crypto asset audit team—comprising 35 auditors—is pursuing more than 230 cases and has recovered over CAD 100 million in taxes through audits over the past three years. The agency frames these findings as a signal of ongoing cryptocurrency tax enforcement activity.
CRA officials acknowledged the regulatory gaps in current Canadian laws for identifying crypto users and assessing tax compliance, noting authorities cannot reliably pinpoint wallet holders. As a result, the CRA has pursued cross‑platform data requests, including information on the top 18,000 users from Dapper Labs. After negotiations between legal teams, the CRA secured data for 2,500 users.
