Ethereum Foundation Faces Internal Dispute Over $5 Million Geth Independence Proposal

Ethereum’s client ecosystem recently faced internal tensions as reported by COINOTAG on June 11. Péter Szilágyi, a principal developer of Geth—the primary Ethereum client—revealed that the Ethereum Foundation had proposed a $5 million offer for the Geth team to operate independently. Despite this significant financial incentive, Szilágyi and his colleagues opted to remain under the foundation’s umbrella, emphasizing their commitment to the project’s centralized development framework. This contrasts with the foundation’s earlier unconditional $5 million funding to Parity, aimed at fostering client diversity to enhance network resilience and decentralization.

In response, Ethereum Foundation co-executive director Tomasz Stańczak reassured the community that Geth remains integral to Ethereum’s infrastructure. Stańczak emphasized that there are no intentions to discontinue Geth, highlighting its critical role in maintaining protocol security and stability. This development underscores the foundation’s strategic balance between supporting multiple clients and preserving the robustness of its flagship software, aligning with broader objectives to sustain a secure and decentralized Ethereum network.
