Tether Exits Uruguay, Cancels $500 Million Data Center Project as Costs Mount, Lays Off 30 of 38 Employees

On November 27, Elobservador reported that Tether Holdings Ltd. informed the MTSS it will end its Uruguay operations and lay off 30 of 38 employees. The firm had planned a $500 million investment, including three data centers in Florida and Tacuarembó with an expected 165 MW load, plus a 300 MW wind/solar park. More than $100 million has been spent, with another $50 million for infrastructure to be owned by UTE and the national grid. The project is deemed economically unviable under current conditions.

As a response, the 31.5-kilovolt model in Florida has raised operating costs, with multiple requests for a more competitive price since November 2023. Tether also proposed switching to a 150-kilovolt transmission cost and revising the power purchase contract, a move that could bolster the Uruguayan power company and reduce engineering overhead.
