In a recent AMA on the Tako platform, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin shared insights on assessing Layer 2 solutions and their relationship with Ethereum’s model. He emphasized the need for a balanced approach, advocating for a hybrid Layer 1 and Layer 2 ecosystem. Vitalik challenged the notion of relegating all transactions to Layer 2, arguing that this could undermine the core functionalities of Ethereum as a transactional medium and a store of value.

He pointed out that cross-L2 operations still rely on Layer 1, illustrating the necessity of retaining certain use cases at the base layer. Conversely, overloading Layer 1 with transactions risks centralization, despite advancements like ZK-EVM. Vitalik highlighted that demand for on-chain transactions will perpetually outstrip capacity, necessitating further developments in Layer 2 technologies.

Looking forward, he suggested that Layer 2 solutions must continue to evolve, with an expectation for more privacy-oriented and application-specific solutions to emerge. In the immediate future, enhancing Layer 1 capabilities, increasing support for cross-L2 interoperability, and allowing the market to dictate effective scaling solutions are vital.
