A development that could mark the beginning of another Bitcoin adoption story in the South American region has occurred. Colombian President Gustavo Petro officially became the owner of a BTC. While many other countries in the region embrace cryptocurrencies with a positive outlook, El Salvador, a Latin American country, officially adopted Bitcoin as legal tender in September 2021.

Samson Mow, the company’s CEO, gifted the Colombian president with BTC worth 100,000 sats. Following this, President Petro shared a message stating that the technology of cryptocurrencies could be promising for the Colombian people. Samson Mow said:

“The Colombian President is now definitely a Bitcoin HODLer. Exactly 100,000 sats.”

President Petro, on the occasion of owning BTC, stated that he would initiate working groups in public administration and communities wherever the technology is beneficial for the economy. He mentioned that cryptocurrencies and blockchain are advancing worldwide and will experience developments towards the future. These technologies can promise hope for the well-being of people.

After Argentina elected right-wing leader Javier Milei as the new president on November 19, 2023, Max Keiser, Bitcoin advisor to El Salvador President Nayib Bukele, requested permission for the Argentina Bitcoin team to visit El Salvador. Subsequently, according to COINOTAG, President Bukele approved the visit of the Bitcoin El Salvador team to Argentina for a “Bitcoin diplomacy mission” aimed at “peace and economic freedom.
