Argentina-Bitcoin

Argentina’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, and Worship, Diana Mondino, claimed that a decree legalizing the use of specific currencies in contracts and payments would also include Bitcoin. In a post on December 21 (formerly known as Twitter), Mondino stated that a decree aiming for economic reform and regulation would allow the use of BTC and other cryptocurrencies in the country under certain conditions.

The ‘Foundations for the Reconstruction of the Argentine Economy’ decree, adopted on December 20, included the option for debtors to make payments in currencies not recognized as legal tender in Argentina, although it did not explicitly mention cryptocurrencies. Mondino affirmed, ‘We approve contracts being made with Bitcoin in Argentina.’

According to Mondino, the decree will also allow contracts to be made using liters of milk or cattle. Other provisions in the decree grant individuals the freedom to choose the type of currency used, largely referring to foreign currencies without explicitly rejecting crypto.

Article 1196 of the decree states, “Parties have the freedom to specify the amount of bonds or collateral and the type of currency used, as well as the method of repayment in case of termination of the lease agreement.”

Increased Crypto Expectations with Milei

After winning the election against former finance minister Sergio Massa, Argentina’s President Javier Milei appointed Mondino as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Many in the field saw Milei’s victory as a positive sign for the adoption of crypto in Argentina.

Milei took office amid dominant inflation nationwide. The economic decree detailed measures following Milei’s first national speech. The President tweeted about the acceptance of the decree, referencing the transition to the “damned freedom,” without explicitly mentioning crypto.

Argentina’s President had previously referred to Bitcoin as a move towards the “return of the private sector, which is the true creator of money.” Since taking office, he has not made a public statement about digital assets.
