Toyota GR Cup Awards Digital Trophies via Polygon (MATIC) Cryptocurrency

  • Toyota Connected North America (TCNA) plans to use the blockchain of the cryptocurrency Polygon (MATIC) to award digital trophies at the Toyota Gazoo Racing Cup (GR Cup).
  • The digital trophy will record drivers’ statistics, top wins, finishing positions, and lap times.
  • Toyota has been exploring the use of blockchain technology in various areas, including intellectual property management and carbon dioxide removal.

Toyota’s subsidiary, TCNA, is leveraging blockchain technology to enhance the motorsport experience by awarding digital trophies at the GR Cup. The trophies will capture various driver performance metrics, offering a unique blend of sports and technology.

Blockchain in Motorsports: A New Era

TCNA’s innovative approach to integrating blockchain technology into motorsports marks the beginning of a new era. The digital trophies, powered by the Polygon (MATIC) blockchain, will record a variety of driver statistics, including top wins, finishing positions, and lap times. This information will be updated every race weekend, providing a transparent and immutable record of driver achievements.

Jack Irving, Commercial Director of Toyota Racing Development (TRD), believes that the use of blockchain technology can enhance the driver experience and foster better engagement with racing fans. The digital trophies not only immortalize driver achievements but also offer a new avenue for introducing racing fans to partner companies.

Toyota’s Blockchain Endeavors

Toyota’s foray into blockchain technology extends beyond the racetrack. In 2022, the automaker began test operations of the Digital Transformation (DX) platform “Proof Chain of Evidence (PCE)”, which utilizes blockchain technology for intellectual property management. Toyota Ventures, a venture capital firm established by Toyota in Silicon Valley, also invested in a blockchain-based marketplace, Nori, aimed at carbon dioxide removal.

Automotive Industry Embracing Blockchain

Toyota is not the only automaker exploring the potential of blockchain technology. Nissan has recently applied for trademarks related to Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and the metaverse with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The applications suggest plans for virtual clothes, cars, and stores for virtual goods and NFTs, indicating a growing trend of blockchain adoption in the automotive industry.

Conclusion

Blockchain technology is increasingly being adopted across various industries, with the automotive sector being no exception. Toyota’s innovative use of blockchain for digital trophies at the GR Cup is a testament to the technology’s potential in enhancing user experiences and fostering engagement. As more automotive giants like Nissan explore blockchain’s potential, the intersection of blockchain and the automotive industry promises exciting developments in the future.
