  • ZKsync Association is set to airdrop 3.675 billion ZK tokens to the initial active users of the Ethereum Layer 2 network, ZKsync, next week.
  • This represents 17.5% of the total ZK token supply, which stands at 21 billion tokens.
  • “Issuing more tokens to the community than to Matter Labs’ team and investors is more than symbolic,” the ZKsync Association stated.

Discover how the upcoming ZKsync airdrop will impact early users and the wider Ethereum Layer 2 ecosystem.

Significant Airdrop Details for Early ZKsync Users

The ZKsync Association has revealed that participants will be able to claim their tokens from next week up until January 3, 2025. Contributors will have the opportunity to stake claims starting from June 24. Out of the total token distribution, 49.1% will be allocated via ecosystem initiatives, 17.2% to investors, and 16.1% to the Matter Labs’ team.

Current Airdrop Statistics and Allocation Methodology

For this airdrop, 695,232 wallets have been shortlisted. Eligibility and allocations were determined based on a snapshot of activities on ZKsync Era and ZKsync Lite as of March 24, 2024. The community airdrop will be split between users who have engaged significantly with the platform (89%) and contributing individuals or entities (11%). The remaining token supply will be designated for investors and the Matter Labs team, with initial holdings locked for one year and a gradual release planned from June 2025 to June 2028.

Understanding the Point-Based Allocation System

The distribution is predicated on a point-based system. Wallets earned points for activities such as interacting with ten smart contracts on ZKsync Era, investing liquidity into DeFi protocols, and trading over ten ERC-20 tokens. Contributions to a Gitcoin round before the ZKsync Era mainnet launch, as well as transactions over three distinct months via ZKsync Lite, also accrued points. Allocations were then determined using a formula incorporating ZKsync Era asset bridge-ing. Wallets could receive multipliers based on their activity across ZKsync and Ethereum mainnet.

Conclusion

Overall, this airdrop aims to reward the most active and dedicated supporters of the ZKsync ecosystem, reinforcing community engagement and incentivizing further participation. As the token governance system is rolled out, those holding significant portions of the ZK token supply will play a critical role in steering future protocol decisions.
