Beware of Fake Ripple USD (RLUSD) Tokens Circulating on XRP Ledger Ahead of Official 2024 Launch

  • As anticipation grows around Ripple’s forthcoming stablecoin, scammers have seized the opportunity to circulate a counterfeit Ripple USD (RLUSD) token on the XRP Ledger (XRPL).
  • Ripple aims to position RLUSD as a heavyweight competitor to industry giants like Tether and Circle in the stablecoin market, though it has yet to launch.
  • Ripple’s President, Monica Long, has indicated that the stablecoin may officially launch in 2024, following its initial announcement in April of this year.

Discover the latest developments around Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin and learn how to protect yourself from counterfeit tokens circulating on the XRPL.

Ripple Stablecoin Is Not Launched Yet

Prominent XRP community member, Krippenreiter, recently took to social media platform X to alert users: “Several reposts falsely claim the early issuance of RLUSD. I even found an AMM pool with some victims already.” He recommended several methods for users to verify the authenticity of RLUSD tokens on XRPL.

Methods for Verifying RLUSD Tokens

To help users identify genuine RLUSD tokens, Krippenreiter outlined essential verification steps:

  1. Account Ancestry: Use an XRPL-based explorer to examine the “r-address” of the issuer, ensuring it links back to early Ripple accounts.
  2. Official Communications: Verify token legitimacy against public announcements on Ripple and RippleX websites.
  3. Compliance with XRPL Standards: Ensure the stablecoin follows practices outlined on xrpl.org, including issuer’s wallet management.
  4. Authorization Requirements: Authentic issuing accounts typically implement “Require Auth” to establish trusted connections, meeting regulatory guidelines.
  5. Multi-Signature Security: Genuine issuing accounts often employ multi-signature security measures.

Wietse Wind, founder of XRPL Labs, also highlighted the dangers of these deceptive tokens: “Screenshots imply RLUSD has been issued on the XRP Ledger. It has NOT. These fake tokens are worthless assets sold by scammers. Do not engage,” he warned via X.

Additionally, Mayukha Vadari, Senior Software Engineer at RippleX, reinforced the message: “Ripple has not launched RLUSD yet.” While recognizing the critique about early announcements possibly aiding scams, Vadari argued, “Transparency balances expectations – scams are a risk both pre- and post-launch.”

Community Vigilance is Key

Vet, operator of the XRP Ledger dUNL, also issued a stern warning on X, urging community members to remain vigilant: “Scammers exploit inattentiveness. Ensure issuer accounts are uniquely associated with Ripple to avoid falling victim.”

Conclusion

The growing anticipation around Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin has unfortunately paved the way for scammers to exploit the excitement, emphasizing the necessity for heightened vigilance within the community. Users should employ stringent verification methods to ensure the authenticity of RLUSD tokens and rely only on official communications from Ripple. As XRP holds steady at $0.50, the community must stay informed to protect against falling prey to fraudulent activities.
