Cambridge University highlights energy consumption in its latest report on Bitcoin mining; Is Bitcoin the cause of global warming?

Cambridge University’s Bitcoin Mining Report

Researchers at Cambridge University have updated their reports on Bitcoin mining, revealing the complex evolution of mining hardware and providing new insights into electricity consumption. This study, conducted by the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index (CBECI) team, addresses the environmental impact of Bitcoin and the increasing concerns for accurate, data-driven insights.

The adoption of Bitcoin globally has led to an increase in mining activities worldwide. Environmentalists have sparked debates about the energy intensity and environmental consequences of mining. To bring clarity to this complex issue, Cambridge University launched CBECI in 2019. Initially focused on electricity consumption, researchers realized the need for a more comprehensive approach. In 2020, they integrated the Mining Map to analyze the geographical distribution of mining, which is considered a critical element in understanding Bitcoin’s climate impact.

The study reveals the fascinating journey of Bitcoin mining hardware from its humble beginnings to its current state. Initially, miners used standard personal computers and relied on central processing units (CPUs). However, as the price of Bitcoin and competition increased, more efficient hardware was needed. Graphics processing units (GPUs) took over in 2010, offering a six-fold increase in efficiency.

The evolution of mining hardware continued with field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) in 2011 and later transformed into application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) in 2012. ASICs became game-changers with their unique efficiency thanks to smaller chip sizes.

Today, mining hardware has reached unprecedented levels of power and efficiency. The latest models, such as Bitmain’s Antminer S19 XP and MicroBT’s Whatsminer M53S++, overshadow their predecessors with incredible hashing speeds. Technological advancements over time have led to more profitable and longer-lasting devices, invalidating the expectation of rapid obsolescence.

Insights into Energy Consumption

The study presents alarming data on Bitcoin’s energy consumption. The revised estimate for 2022 reduced it to 95.5 TWh, equivalent to the electricity consumption of countries. The 2023 estimates stand at 70.4 TWh, demonstrating the dynamic nature of Bitcoin mining’s energy needs.

To put it into perspective, Bitcoin mining’s energy consumption is comparable to the energy consumption of all clothes dryers in the United States (108 TWh) and the renewable energy restrictions in China (105 TWh). Globally, this adjustment represents approximately 0.38% of total electricity consumption.

Cambridge University’s research showcases the actual energy consumption of Bitcoin mining. As major companies embrace renewable energy sources for Bitcoin mining, these figures will continue to decrease. It is time for environmentalists to find other activities that should be seen as the cause of global warming because Bitcoin mining is no longer the culprit.

The research highlights the evolution of Bitcoin mining hardware and its impact on energy consumption. The industry has come a long way, and current devices significantly outperform their predecessors. Cambridge University’s research emphasizes the need for continuous research in the crypto industry in an environment where technology keeps advancing.
