The DeFi ecosystem took a heavy blow from KelpDAO's rsETH exploit; however, according to Standard Chartered, this blow was not fatal. The "DeFi – Bent, not broken" report signed by Geoffrey Kendrick emphasizes that the 292 million dollars worth of rsETH stolen via a fake message over LayerZero on April 18 was funneled into the AAVE detailed analysis platform, bringing systemic risk to light in the industry's largest lending protocol. The attacker collateralized unbacked rsETH and borrowed real assets, triggering bank heist-like withdrawals across the protocol. Aave lost 17 billion dollars equivalent to 38% of total deposits and 5.5 billion dollars representing 31% of active loans. Bank analysts argue that this event could carry the industry "from fragility to strength."

How Did the KelpDAO rsETH Exploit Spread?

The exploit spread rapidly with the deposit of stolen rsETH into Aave, fueling market fear. A coalition led by Aave founder Stani Kulechov committed over 300 million dollars to restore normal operations; as yields fell, net deposits began to recover. Under the DeFi United initiative, Aave DAO, Arbitrum, Consensys, Joseph Lubin, Mantle, Lido and others focused on capital injection rather than finger-pointing.

Aave V4 and EEZ Plans Reduce Bridge Risks

Standard Chartered notes that with Aave V4 going live at the end of March, Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) plans will reduce dependence on bridge attacks. These steps heal the wounds created by the crisis while accelerating structural transformation. The crisis exposed DeFi's risks based on complexity rather than volatility; particularly, the mismatch between staked and restaked assets and liabilities with different risk profiles spread cyclical leverage operations.

AAVE Technical Analysis: Support and Resistance Levels

Current AAVE price 95.35 USD, 24-hour change -0.59%. RSI 47.86 in neutral zone, overall trend downward and Supertrend giving bear signal. EMA 20: 97.14 USD. Strong supports: S1 95.53 USD (⭐ STRONG, 68% score), S2 90.25 USD. Resistances: R1 98.58 USD (⭐ STRONG, 75% score), R2 103.80 USD. These levels are critical for AAVE futures; if recovery holds above S1, it could support ecosystem coins like ARB detailed analysis.

Still, Standard Chartered maintains its forecast that real world assets (RWA) will reach 2 trillion dollars by the end of 2028 — starting from 35 billion dollars in October 2025. This event stress-tests and reinforces the DeFi banking and stablecoin liquidity-based growth thesis; maturing infrastructure will scale tokenized funds and money market products.
