According to the decision published in the official gazette today, Hafize Gaye Erkan has been appointed as the President of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey.
Hafize Gaye Erkan Appointed as the President of the CBRT
Hafize Gaye Erkan, who has been mentioned for a long time as a candidate for the Presidency of the CBRT, has been appointed as the President of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey with the decision published in the official gazette today.
With the appointment of Hafize Gaye Erkan to the Presidency, Şahap Kavcıoğlu, who has been serving as the President of the CBRT since March 20, 2021, has ended his term today. Şahap Kavcıoğlu, who replaced Naci Ağbal, served as the President of the CBRT for 2 years and 2 months.
After the presidential elections on May 28, 2023, Hafize Gaye Erkan was mentioned as a candidate for the Presidency of the Central Bank following the announcement of the new cabinet. It was also reported that she had a meeting with Hafize Gaye Erkan after Mehmet Şimşek was appointed as the Minister of Treasury and Finance.
With the decision published in the official gazette today, Hafize Gaye Erkan officially became the President of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey.
Who is Hafize Gaye Erkan?
Hafize Gaye Erkan was born in Istanbul in 1982. She graduated from Istanbul Erkek Lisesi and then won the Industrial Engineering department of Boğaziçi University in 1997. She completed this department with the first place in 2001. She was then accepted to Princeton University and moved abroad. She completed her doctorate in “Operations Research and Financial Engineering” at Princeton University.
Hafize Gaye Erkan completed the 2-year, 12-course doctoral program in 1 year and became the first student to complete the program in 1 year at Princeton University. Erkan also won the title of “youngest finance professor” in the USA.
After her education, Hafize Gaye Erkan started working at Goldman Sachs in 2005 with the offer she received. Erkan, who worked at Goldman Sachs for about 9 years, served as the Head of the Financial Institutions Group Analytics and Strategies Department.
Erkan, who started working as the Chief Investment Officer at First Republic Bank in 2014, was promoted to the chairmanship of the board of directors in 2019. Erkan left her position at First Republic Bank in December 2021.
Hafize Gaye Erkan is actively a member of the advisory board of the Operations Research and Financial Engineering Department at Princeton University (since 2016). She is also currently serving as a Board Member at Marsh McLennan (since 2022).
In addition, Erkan served as a Board Member at the US jewelry company Tiffany & Co between 2019 and 2021.
