Developments Regarding Ethereum Dencun Update

Following the successful launch of the Ethereum Dencun Upgrade on the Goerli test network, Galaxy Researcher Christine Kim has disclosed two important dates that the community should now consider.

While the Ethereum Dencun upgrade is expected to be activated on the Sepolia test network by January 30, the same upgrade’s activation date on the Holesky test network is currently planned for February 7. Regarding the activation of test networks, client versions for both upgrades will be compiled and shared in a blog post on January 23.

The Ethereum Dencun Upgrade has been long-awaited and initially planned for a start in 2023. However, due to specific inconsistencies, the launch date has been continuously postponed to a preferred date. Client developers confirmed in October that they would not implement the hard fork before the end of the year.

Developer Potuz, with the alias Prysm, stated, “There is no way we would implement a mainnet fork in 2023.” It became apparent that developer clients for the consensus layer and execution layer disagreed with each other and contributed further to the delays experienced so far.

Proposed Phased Deployment of the Upgrade

The final launch on the Goerli test network marks a significant milestone towards integration into the Ethereum mainnet. The distribution on the Goerli test network came with the implementation of EIP-4844. EIP-4844 introduces a revolutionary transaction mechanism known as Proto-Danksharding.

This brings a system that allows Ethereum nodes to temporarily store and access off-chain data, reducing transaction costs for Decentralized Applications (DApps). According to the explanation provided by Ethereum developers, this effectively reduces the load on storage resources. Soon, this will contribute to increasing the efficiency of Layer-2 rollup chains.

The future activation of the Ethereum Dencun Upgrade on the Sepolia and Holesky test networks largely depends on what unfolds on the Goerli test network in the coming weeks. Once the upgrade runs smoothly on all three test networks, activation will be the next target. The phased deployment of the Ethereum Dencun Upgrade aims to ensure a seamless transition. The Ethereum Dencun Upgrade follows the Ethereum Shapella upgrade of 2023.
