In a significant announcement made during Thursday’s All Devs Call, developers from the Ethereum Foundation unveiled plans for a new testnet called Hoodi, set to launch on March 17th. This long-term testnet is designed to rigorously assess the final deployment of Pectra prior to its anticipated activation on the Ethereum mainnet. This follows prior delays linked to configuration challenges faced by the Pectra upgrade on both the Holesky and Sepolia testnets. The Pectra upgrade is poised to enhance Ethereum’s usability and scalability by significantly cutting data availability costs. It will achieve this by boosting the volume of “blob” transactions on layer 2 solutions, substantially raising staking limits, and incorporating account abstraction. Together, these improvements could greatly enrich the capabilities of smart contracts and wallets. The official activation on the Ethereum mainnet is projected for April 25th, roughly 30 days post the Hoodi testnet rollout.
