On June 3rd, the Ethereum Foundation made headlines with its announcement of a strategic organizational restructuring involving a partial staff reduction. This move aims to enhance focus on pressing challenges in protocol design, with the research department officially renamed to “Protocol”. This change follows persistent criticism from the community regarding the Foundation’s management and overall strategy.
Industry experts have cautioned that neglecting essential technical concerns could jeopardize Ethereum’s status as a pioneering technology within the blockchain sector. To counter this, the newly formed Protocol team will concentrate on three pivotal areas: scaling the Ethereum network, advancing the blobspace extension for improved data availability, and refining the user experience.
While the exact number of staff layoffs remains undisclosed, the Foundation has suggested that remaining teams should integrate valuable team members. This reorganization intends to streamline upgrade processes, enhance technical documentation, and foster greater research transparency. Co-executive director Hsiao-Wei Weng conveyed optimism on social media, expressing confidence that this new structure will propel key projects forward with increased efficiency.
