US Marshals Hold Only 28,988 Bitcoin, Far Below Previous $25 Billion Estimates

Recent disclosures obtained via the Freedom of Information Act by crypto journalist L0la L33tz reveal that the US Marshals Service currently holds significantly fewer Bitcoin than previously reported. According to the Department of Justice, as of March, the agency’s holdings stand at just 28,988 BTC, valued at roughly $3.4 billion based on current market prices. This figure contrasts sharply with estimates from prominent data aggregators. For instance, Arkham Intelligence projects that US government entities collectively possess nearly $25 billion in crypto assets, while Bitcoin Treasuries data suggests a total holding of approximately 198,012 BTC. Senator Cynthia Lummis, an advocate for maintaining strategic Bitcoin reserves, expressed concern over reports indicating a potential sale of over 80% of the government’s Bitcoin holdings, warning that such a move could significantly undermine the US’s position in the evolving digital asset landscape.
