EU’s ‘Plan B’ for Economic Sanctions on Russia Amidst Uncertain U.S. Commitment to Ukraine Talks

COINOTAG News reports that on May 1st, a senior EU diplomat revealed that the European Union is actively formulating a contingency plan to uphold economic sanctions against Russia. This development arises amidst concerns regarding potential shifts in U.S. foreign policy under the Trump administration, which, according to EU High Representative Borrell, may retreat from Ukraine negotiations. The diplomat stated, “The dilemma lies in whether the Americans will forsake these negotiations.” This caution follows advisors to U.S. Secretary of State Pompeo, who indicated that the U.S. could withdraw its mediation role if substantial progress is not achieved. Borrell further noted that if Hungary stymies the extension of sanctions next July, the EU has crafted a Plan B to sustain economic pressure on Russia, while emphasizing the importance of member state unity.
