The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) announced that it will integrate “AI co-workers” into its analytical platforms in the coming years. This classified generative artificial intelligence tool will assist analysts in tasks such as detecting spies, predicting foreign enemy moves, preparing main judgment drafts, testing analytical results, and identifying intelligence trends. CIA Deputy Director Michael Ellis, according to Politico, emphasized at a Washington DC event that humans will continue to make the main decisions.
CIA's AI Plans and Anthropic Dispute
The CIA’s announcement came during the dispute between the Department of Defense and Anthropic. Despite a $200 million contract, Anthropic blocked the Claude model for mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. President Donald Trump ordered federal agencies to drop Anthropic technology; the court request was rejected. Ellis stated that a single company cannot be allowed to restrict capabilities. The CIA tested 300 AI projects last year and produced its first AI-supported intelligence report.
