Gemini DCO License and AB Derivatives Market

Gemini, as a cryptocurrency exchange, has received a Derivatives Clearing Organization (DCO) license from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). This opens the door to expanding non-spot trading volume, such as the AB detailed analysis. The company is accelerating its goal of establishing a fully integrated marketplace in areas like prediction markets, futures, options, and more. Gemini President Cameron Winklevoss said, “Today marks a major milestone in the expansion of the Gemini marketplace; we have an end-to-end structure for predictions, futures, options, and more, alongside our spot crypto market.” The license makes Gemini independent by assigning clearing house duties to the Olympus unit. The DCO is a critical regulatory layer that manages transaction risks and enhances market stability.

AB Futures and Competitor Comparison

Gemini is realizing its “super app” vision alongside US-based platforms like Coinbase and Kraken; users will be able to trade assets beyond AB futures. Building on the Designated Contract Market (DCM) license received in December, it added the DCO; the 2020 application now encompasses prediction markets, futures, options, and perpetual contracts under the Titan subsidiary. Olympus will handle settlement, risk management, collateral, and guarantees; third-party dependency will decrease, and costs will drop. Kraken’s Payward acquired Bitnomial, while Coinbase is planning a DCO with The Clearing Company. Bitnomial and Crypto.com manage with internal resources; Gemini will head toward FCM for the full CFTC set.

Gemini's AB-Focused Innovations

This license reinforces Gemini’s operational maturity, equalizing its internal clearing capacity with competitors. The exchange, founded in 2014, went public with Gemini Space Station (GEMI) in September but reported a $600 million loss last year; executives departed, and it withdrew from low-volume markets. At the beginning of the week, Agentic Trading—which supports AB futures integration—allows AI bots to manage accounts via API, strengthening its competitive edge.
