New call records have emerged showing that Argentine President Javier Milei made seven phone calls that night to one of the entrepreneurs behind the Libra token when he introduced it. Records obtained by Argentine prosecutors and reviewed by The New York Times question Milei's claim that he had no connection to the project. The contents of the calls are unknown.

Milei's Libra Token Promotion and Call Records

In February 2025, Milei's post on the X platform introducing Libra to grow the Argentine economy triggered the token's rapid rise. However, shortly after the promotion, the token lost 96% from its peak, causing investors at least $251 million in losses. Milei deleted his posts and stated he had no connection, claiming he was unaware of the project's details. The new records weaken this defense.

Libra Token Crash and Investor Losses

Libra's dramatic fall led to a loss of trust in the crypto market. Such pump-and-dump schemes remind us to stay away from unstable assets unlike BTC detailed analysis. The token's crash once again exposed the risks of speculative projects and dashed economic hopes in Argentina.

Corruption Allegations and Federal Investigation

Due to the Libra crash, Milei faces fraud charges and impeachment calls, with a federal investigation ongoing. The Corruption Office found no ethical violation in June. In March, a draft $5 million agreement was found on crypto lobbyist Mauricio Novelli's phone three days before the promotion, but the buyer is unspecified. Cointelegraph reached out to the presidential office.

Lessons in Crypto Policies: BTC Futures

  • Token promotions by political figures are risky.
  • Regulated instruments like BTC futures should be preferred.
  • Real solutions should be sought for the Argentine economy.
