Canada CRA Collects Over C$1B Through Crypto Audits as Dapper Labs NFT Data Reveals Enforcement Gaps

The Block, citing court documents, reports that the Canada Revenue Agency has collected more than 1 billion CAD in taxes through crypto-related audits over the last three years, while no criminal charges have been filed since 2020. The findings highlight a structural enforcement gap, as the CRA operates with a compact 35-person crypto audit team that has managed over 230 cases, with roughly 40% of crypto platform users either underreporting taxes or presenting elevated compliance risk.

Separately, the report notes the CRA’s acquisition of data on 2,500 Dapper Labs users through a court order, after initially seeking information on 18,000 accounts and narrowing the scope after negotiations with executives and legal counsel. This disclosure marks the second instance for a Canadian crypto company under a court order, following the Coinsquare precedent established in 2020.
