Crypto options: frequently asked questions
What are crypto options?
A crypto option is a contract that gives the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to buy (call) or sell (put) a coin at a set strike price on a set expiry date, in return for a premium. The most the buyer can lose is that premium. This page follows the options of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Dogecoin and BNB. Right now Bitcoin is the largest market here, with 83% of the notional open interest.
What is the difference between calls and puts?
A call gains when the price rises above its strike and a put gains when it falls below it. The open interest chart on this page splits every coin into call and put positions, so you can see which side holds more. Together the six coins hold $34.37B of notional open interest in this snapshot.
What options are expiring today, and when is the next expiry?
Crypto options expire at 08:00 UTC. Daily and weekly expiries share that hour, and the monthly and quarterly expiries on the last Friday of the month are the largest. At expiry an option in the money is settled at the expiry price, usually in cash, and the rest expire worthless. The next expiry on this page is Nov 1, 2026 (Daily) for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Dogecoin, BNB, with $1.30B of notional open interest.
What are max pain and the put/call ratio?
Max pain is the strike at which option buyers would lose the most at an expiry; it is a reference level, not a price target. The put/call ratio divides open puts by open calls, and a value above 1 usually reflects protection rather than a bearish call. Bitcoin max pain is $77,500 (−0.2% from the index price) for the Nov 4, 2026 expiry. Its put/call ratio by open interest is 0.74.
Are options different from futures?
Yes. A future obliges both sides to trade at a set price, while an option gives only the buyer a right and caps the buyer's loss at the premium. Options data shows which strikes hold the most positions and where traders hedge.
