Vitalik Buterin Proposes RISC-V to Enhance Ethereum’s Efficiency by 100x

On April 20th, Vitalik Buterin put forth a significant proposal during a discussion reported by Cointelegraph, advocating for the transition from the current EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) language to the RISC-V instruction set architecture. This initiative aims to enhance the speed and zero-knowledge efficiency of the Ethereum execution layer, which is viewed as a crucial step for maintaining competitive edge against emerging blockchains such as Solana. Buterin emphasized that adopting RISC-V is the “only viable path” toward optimizing the synchronization between the execution and consensus layers of the blockchain. Additionally, he projects that implementing this change could yield efficiency gains of up to 100 times, significantly improving Ethereum’s overall throughput and reinforcing its position in the evolving crypto landscape.
