AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) was founded in 2017 by Abel Avellan in Texas and is a satellite communications company targeting direct cellular connectivity from low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to standard smartphones. The core technical innovation is that users do not need to replace their phone or antenna: an existing 4G/5G handset can communicate directly with a SpaceMobile satellite. The first commercial BlueBird satellites were placed into orbit in 2024, and limited beta service launched in 2024–2025. A larger satellite constellation is required for scaled commercial service.
