Mainnet: What It Is and How It Works

A mainnet is a blockchain's live production network, where transactions are final and carry real economic value, as opposed to a testnet used for development and testing. When a project "launches mainnet", its network and native token start operating for real users.

How a mainnet works

A mainnet is the version of a blockchain that everyone agrees is the chain: its nodes share the real ledger, its validators or miners are rewarded in a token with market value, and its transactions cannot be undone.

Before reaching that stage, developers run the same software on one or more testnets, public copies where tokens are free and have no value. Testnets let teams try upgrades, let users rehearse, and let developers deploy smart contracts without risking money. Each network has its own chain ID, so a transaction signed for a testnet cannot be replayed on the mainnet.

Projects often move through stages: a devnet for the core team, public testnets, sometimes an incentivized testnet, then a mainnet beta with limits or known risks, and finally a full mainnet. Ethereum launched its mainnet in 2015, and Solana launched as "Mainnet Beta" in 2020.

What a mainnet launch means

  • Real value moves. The token becomes transferable and usable for fees, staking or governance on its own chain.
  • Token migration. Projects that first issued tokens on another chain (for example as ERC-20 tokens) may ask holders to swap them for native mainnet coins. Genuine migrations are announced on the project's official channels; unsolicited "migration" links are a common scam.
  • Exchange and wallet support. Exchanges and wallets add support for deposits and withdrawals on the new network, sometimes after a delay.

A mainnet launch is a technical milestone, not a guarantee that the network is secure, widely used or valuable.

When sending funds, always check which network a wallet or exchange is using. Sending real tokens to an address on the wrong network, or selecting a testnet by accident, can lead to lost funds or failed transfers.

Frequently Asked Questions

4 questions
What is a mainnet in crypto?

It is the live, production version of a blockchain, where transactions are real and tokens have economic value.

What is the difference between mainnet and testnet?

A mainnet handles real value, while a testnet is a copy for testing where tokens are free and worthless.

What does a mainnet launch mean for token holders?

The network goes live and the native token can be used on its own chain. Some projects require holders to migrate earlier tokens; check official announcements only.

What is a mainnet beta?

It is a live network that handles real value but is still labelled as early, with possible limits, known issues or planned changes.
