On April 12th, COINOTAG News reported that the Spanish police have successfully dismantled a cryptocurrency investment scam involving six individuals. This operation, which lasted over two years, unveiled a scheme that utilized artificial intelligence to mislead and defraud a total of 208 victims, resulting in financial losses exceeding 19 million euros (approximately 21.5 million dollars). The investigation was initiated after a significant report from a man in Granada, who lost 624,000 euros (over 700,000 dollars). Authorities revealed that the suspects employed sophisticated deepfake technology to fabricate convincing videos of celebrities, manipulating potential investors into parting with their money. Further complicating matters, victims were misled into believing they needed to inject additional funds to unlock their initial investment, under the guise of achieving exorbitant returns from cryptocurrency ventures. While the specific digital assets involved have not been disclosed, authorities have issued a caution against investing in dubious digital currencies.
