Institutional trading and lending platform Secure Digital Markets (SDM) announced that it executed a $1 million payment to crypto exchange Kraken BTC Detailed Analysis via the Lightning Network on January 28. In a statement to Cointelegraph, it was noted that this transaction is the largest publicly announced Lightning transfer to date and serves as proof for seven-figure payments between regulated parties.

Details of the $1 Million Record Transfer on Lightning Network

The payment was completed in just 0.43 seconds and was routed using Voltage's managed Lightning infrastructure. This infrastructure provides node management, liquidity provisioning, and a 99.99% uptime guarantee. The previous record single Lightning payment was around 1.24 BTC (approximately $140,000 at the time). Voltage CEO Graham Krizek said, "This transaction proves that Lightning is ready for institutional Bitcoin payments."

Changes and Trend Analysis in Lightning Network Capacity

The Lightning Network's total capacity declined from 5,400 BTC at the end of 2023 to 4,200 BTC in mid-2025, but reached a peak of 5,600 BTC in December 2025. According to Fidelity Digital Assets, capacity has increased by 384% since 2020. This fluctuation stems from liquidity management and channel opening costs. With institutional adoption, capacity could rise again.

Institutional Lightning Solutions: Voltage and Blockstream

Blockstream announced it is developing institutional Lightning solutions, including Lightning bridges integrated with the Liquid Network. Voltage's role is critical: it provides zero-maintenance Lightning nodes to institutional users, minimizing delays with HTLC (Hash Time-Locked Contracts) routing optimization.

Recent Drop in BTC Price and Lightning's Role

Bitcoin fell below $70,000 for the first time since November 6, 2024 (currently 69.439 dollars, -7,90% 24h change). RSI at 19,89 is in oversold territory. Layer-2 solutions like Lightning can support BTC's long-term value by enhancing its payment-focused usage.

Impact of Lightning Record on BTC Institutional Adoption

This record enables fast, low-cost BTC transfers between regulated institutions. Although Supertrend is bearish (EMA20: 82.843$), Lightning developments are strengthening the BTC ecosystem. Investors should monitor the S1 support.
