Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is a semiconductor company founded in 1987 by Morris Chang in Hsinchu, Taiwan, and today the world's largest independent integrated circuit manufacturer (foundry). TSMC pioneered the "pure-play foundry" model — fabricating chips designed by customers without producing any chip designs of its own. TSMC was established through a strategic investment by the Taiwanese government in 1987. Morris Chang, following his career at Texas Instruments and General Instrument, invented the pure foundry model: manufacturing only chips designed by others.
