Claude Docs and Slides Go Live

Anthropic launched Claude Docs and Claude Slides on September 16, converting what a chat session produces into live, shareable web documents and presentations instead of a one-off file download. Both tools shipped in beta, and access is limited to paying subscribers — free accounts are locked out for now. Alongside the two launches, the company folded Claude Design, previously a standalone product surface, directly into the chat interface.

The framing Anthropic uses in its official announcement is “web-native”: every artifact — a Docs file, a Slides deck, a Design visual — lives on a single shareable link rather than on a hard drive, and anyone with permission can open and edit it, including from a phone. That is a different operating model from the familiar loop of asking an AI to write something and downloading the result. In Claude Docs the default state is private, and sharing is scoped either to named recipients or to an entire organization. Colleagues can co-edit the same document simultaneously while Claude sits alongside the work, drafting paragraphs, posing questions and leaving comments on specific passages. The release builds on earlier moves: Claude recently gained the ability to edit Word documents and to save recurring workflows as reusable skills, while Anthropic has retired its separate Cowork product and folded it into the Claude chat experience, leaving the AI to judge task size on its own. In effect, the assistant stops being a one-shot generator and becomes a persistent participant in the document workflow.

Beta Limits and Export Formats

Claude Slides follows the same link-based logic. A user asks for a presentation inside an ordinary conversation, Claude drafts it, and the deck can then be adjusted slide by slide, presented directly from within Claude, or downloaded as a PowerPoint or PDF file for use elsewhere. Claude Docs, for its part, exports to Microsoft Word and Google Docs, and Anthropic says further export destinations are still in planning — a meaningful constraint while the tools carry a beta label.

Claude Design, which previously ran in its own dedicated interface, can now be invoked from any chat window. For a single image or a one-page visual, users can drag elements themselves, ask Claude to make the edit, or — on mobile — tap elements directly on screen to adjust them. Mobile reach is consistent across the whole release: Docs, Slides and Design all open and edit through the shared link from a phone.

The open questions are operational rather than conceptual. With permissions centered on shared links, edit history and export compatibility become load-bearing concerns: a team migrating from desktop file workflows will judge how faithfully the Word and Google Docs exports carry over formatting, and how granularly access can be managed as documents circulate across an organization. Those limits are visible in the current release — the export list is short and user-facing permission controls are still basic — so real-world collaboration quality will only be verified as paid-plan usage accumulates and Anthropic expands the supported formats. For now the beta scope is the story: a functioning draft of a web-native document stack, gated behind paid plans and awaiting the compatibility work that would make it a daily tool. Taken together, the two launches describe one inflection: AI assistants are moving out of the chat bubble into persistent, cloud-collaborative workspaces that compete with office software rather than with chatbots. Our reading of the official Anthropic blog is that the load-bearing claim of the release is exactly that — Docs, Slides and Design all live on one shareable link, editable from mobile, so the artifact outlives the conversation. Two constraints will set the adoption pace: the paid-plan beta gate and the short export list.
