Las Vegas BTC Conference: MARA Foundation Launch
At the Las Vegas Bitcoin Conference, MARA Holdings CEO Fred Thiel sharply stated that Bitcoin's future is not guaranteed. Announcing the MARA Foundation, which extends beyond the company's Bitcoin mining and artificial intelligence activities, Thiel revealed that they have launched a comprehensive initiative to strengthen the network's long-term resilience. He described Bitcoin as "a public service that no one owns but everyone depends on." He emphasized that decentralization means sharing responsibility, not irresponsibility. With this vision, the foundation will center on preserving Bitcoin's qualities as sound and enduring money.
Thiel's words highlight that the Bitcoin network requires active management. The foundation will primarily bolster the security budget and accelerate the formation of a sustainable transaction fee market. It will support research against risks like quantum computing threats. It will allocate resources to open-source projects for scaling, mining, and user infrastructure; increase self-custody access and promote global financial independence. It will organize education programs, conduct skill-building initiatives, prepare multilingual materials, and engage in dialogue with policymakers. On the occasion of the launch, MARA will donate $100,000 to one of three non-profit organizations; the winner will be selected by community vote. These three organizations, covering education, development, and infrastructure communities, are also coming under the foundation's umbrella.
