Canada's Ministry of Finance has brought a complete ban on Bitcoin and crypto ATMs onto the agenda. This radical step was designed to curb rising fraud cases and protect especially the elderly and vulnerable groups. The government described these devices as the main traps where citizens lose their savings in the economic update published on Wednesday. Self-service kiosks in gas stations and supermarkets make it easier for scammers. If the ban comes, these machines proliferating across Canada will become history.
Crypto ATM Fraud Risks in Canada
Some provinces, for example Quebec, have required crypto ATM operators to obtain money services business licenses for years. Despite this, the federal government has moved to override local rules with a national shutdown order. Scammers usually disguise themselves as government officials or police and direct victims to ATMs, quickly transferring the money to criminal wallets. Cash-crypto exchanges in staffed offices in physical stores will continue as an exception.
FINTRAC's Strict Audits and License Revocations
FINTRAC strictly monitors money services businesses against threats like money laundering and terrorist financing; in March, it revoked 84 licenses, including many virtual currency transfer companies like ATM Token Financial. These audits aim to minimize risks in the crypto ecosystem.
Canada and Global Crypto ATM Distribution
According to Coin ATM Radar data, Canada hosts about 4,000 crypto ATMs, with a quarter concentrated around Montreal. The US leads the field with over 30,000 machines. The FBI's latest figures reveal that Americans over 60 lost 257 million dollars in these scams last year, with the damage jumping 58% from the previous year. While Indiana has banned machines outright, Tennessee approved a similar law effective July 1; countries like New Zealand have followed the same path as an anti-money laundering measure.
