Jimmy Song: Conservative Node Software Essential for Bitcoin

Jimmy Song, one of the founders of ProductionReady, stated that there is a need for a conservative Bitcoin client node software implementation to preserve the monetary properties of the Bitcoin (BTC) network and strengthen decentralization. The organization only looks favorably on significant code changes if there is overwhelming community support and adopts the principle of "Make the change if it improves money." Song explained that they plan to revert the OP_RETURN data limit to 83 bytes to keep node storage costs low; this makes it easier for ordinary users to run nodes, making the network more resilient.

Bitcoin Core 30 and OP_RETURN Limit Discussion

Bitcoin Core 30 version was released in October 2025 and increased the 83-byte OP_RETURN limit to 100,000 bytes; this decision caused a major backlash in the community, with the BTC detailed analysis proposal receiving four times more negative votes on GitHub. OP_RETURN is an opcode used for data storage in Bitcoin; high limits inflate the blockchain, increasing nodes' storage needs and making it harder to run full nodes.

In the end, Bitcoin Knots nodes reached record levels; currently with 4,746 Knots nodes, they make up 21.7% of the network, while in 2024 it was only 1%. Bitcoin Core leads with 77.8% market share. According to Coin Dance data, this development has increased node diversity.
