ECB-Led Change: Lagarde's Early Departure Claim

According to the Financial Times, European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde is considering ending her eight-year term, which began in November 2019, early before October 2027. It is reported that she took this step to allow French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to agree on a successor ahead of France's April 2027 presidential election. The ECB spokesperson denied the report, stating that Lagarde is fully focused on her duties and has not made any decision regarding the end of her term.

During Lagarde's tenure, the ECB continued preparations for the digital euro and focused on managing stablecoin risks under the MiCA regulation. Lagarde described crypto assets like Bitcoin (BTC) as speculative and worthless. Potential successors include Spaniard Pablo Hernández de Cos, Dutchman Klaas Knot, Isabel Schnabel, and Joachim Nagel; all of whom approach crypto and stablecoins cautiously. The digital euro project aims to reach a legal framework in 2026 after EU legislative approval, a pilot phase in 2027, and first issuance around 2029.

BTC Volatility: Hive and Metaplanet Examples

Recent news highlights BTC volatility: Bitcoin mining company Hive suffered a net loss of 91 million dollars due to accelerated depreciation. Metaplanet reported a 619 million dollar loss in BTC valuation but increased its holdings to 35.102 BTC. These developments justify the ECB's cautious stance on BTC.
